The Demands of Priorities

First and foremost, a leader must lead himself...or the culture will lead him.

Because life gets confusing and conflicting, leaders have to decide what matters most or they become victims of the "loudest or latest." No leader will ever lack for things to occupy his or her time and energy. Therefore, every leader must know what his/her top priorities are.

Effective leaders have the ability to discern not only the difference between the good and the bad, but also the difference between the good and the best. Since we cannot do everything well, we must carefully choose a few things on which we will concentrate. This is only common sense to stick to what we are good at doing. However, there is another concern, an ultimate concern. As good as we may be at what we do, according to Jesus, our ultimate purpose is to honor God and serve others. Therefore, any position, no matter how gifted we are for it, exists for that purpose.

With that in mind, then, let's look at a few sobering verses that will help us think through how we are doing with our priorities. OK?

Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Looking to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith... Hebrews 12:1-2

Whatever was to my profit, (position, prestige etc) I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. Philippians 3:7

Do not be foolish, (subject to the whim and fancy of men) but understand what the Lords will is. Ephesians 5:17

Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6

In the final analysis, "faith" is spelled R-I-S-K!

And that is what all leaders have to do from time to time. Take a risk! To honor God and serve others in any position that we hold will require that we not only demonstrate competence but that we also have courage! A those times, we have to put it all on the line--reputation etc.--to do that which will please God but not necessarily pleases men. Those of us who lead know that this is unaviodable...and very true. Therefore, a leader must be prepared for such moments by knowing in advance what his or her priorities really are...and stick to them...no matter what!
